Start Your File 8 Months Early

IELTS, attested transcripts, the SEK 900 application fee, tuition payment and proof of funds all take time. We recommend beginning eight months before the 15 January deadline.

The full process takes 6-9 months from application to departure. Migrationsverket typically decides student permits in 1 to 3 months, longer during the autumn peak.

The residence permit fee is SEK 1,500, plus a one-time SEK 900 university application fee.

University Tuition Waivers

Partial or full tuition waivers from universities such as Lund, Uppsala, KTH and Stockholm, awarded on academic merit.

Swedish Institute Scholarships

The SI Scholarships for Global Professionals cover full tuition, travel, insurance and a monthly living allowance of about SEK 12,000 for one-year and two-year master's students from eligible countries.

Paid Doctoral Positions

PhD students in Sweden are employed with a salary, pension and holiday — doctoral study is a paid job, not a fee-paying degree.

For applications made in 2026 the Swedish Migration Agency requires SEK 10,656 per month for the whole permit period, which is about SEK 106,560 for a ten-month academic year, on top of paid tuition. Scholarships and student loans count; money from relatives must be transferred into your own account.

Students on a bachelor's or master's programme may work a maximum of 15 hours per week if their residence permit was granted on or after 11 June 2026. Study must remain the main purpose of your stay, and work income does not replace the proof-of-funds requirement.

Yes. After completing at least two semesters you can apply for a residence permit of up to 12 months to look for work or explore starting a business. Apply before your student permit expires while you are still in Sweden.

Most programmes cost between SEK 80,000 and SEK 200,000 per year, with engineering, design and medicine at the higher end. Doctoral positions are salaried and carry no tuition fee.

All applications go through the national portal universityadmissions.se. You can list up to four programmes in one application and pay a single SEK 900 application fee.

Most master's programmes ask for IELTS 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5, or an equivalent TOEFL or PTE score. Sweden calls this English 6.

Not for your studies. More than 1,000 programmes are taught entirely in English and English is spoken almost universally. Swedish helps for part-time jobs and for graduate roles outside technology.

Yes. The Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals cover full tuition, travel, insurance and a living allowance for selected candidates, and most universities offer their own tuition waivers alongside your programme application.

Migrationsverket usually decides student permits in one to three months, but the autumn peak is slower. Apply as soon as you have paid your tuition, because the university must confirm payment before a decision.

Graduates who find qualified work can move to a work permit — the general salary threshold is SEK 34,470 per month, with a lower floor for former students. Permanent residence normally requires four years of qualifying work in the past seven.
